Does the future of GPS exist on the mobile phone? Nokia announced that it will put GPS technology into a minimum of 50% of its phones with in-built GPS as standard by 2010-2012.
The company expects to sell some 35 million GPS units this year and many more location-enabled phones that use cell-towers to orient themselves on the map.
Nokia's move is seen as a response to an increasingly competitive market in which the price of handsets are continually dropping.
Nokia is planning a navigation system that will allow users to update maps to keep them accurate (a similar system to the TomTom service) and with millions of phone users on the move, Nokia Maps could become one of the most used and accurate mobile mapping systems in use.
